Fit and Trim at the Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain

Arizona’s Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain has played host to celebrities for decades, serving as a training facility for professional athletes like the tennis player Ken Rosewall and a quiet escape from the limelight for superstars like Elton John. This summer, the secluded 53-acre resort is luring amateur jocks and health-conscious travelers with two fitness programs.

For the aspiring athlete, Sanctuary’s three-day Triathlon Prep Program (from $1,797 per person, including accommodations) is a cram session in swimming, cycling, and running. Led by the resort’s elite fitness team, the program devotes a full day to each of the race’s disciplines: a guided bike ride in the desert, a tandem run with a personal trainer, and a swimming session with the former Olympian Misty Hyman (a gold medalist in the 200-meter butterfly at the 2000 games). Recuperation is part of the package as well, with tailored spa treatments like reflexology and sports-therapy massages ending each day of strenuous activity.
Guests in search of a more holistic experience can book the resort’s Satori Wellness Retreat, a four-day journey (priced from $2,455 per person, including accommodations) that combines a personalized fitness regimen with nutrition and meditative programs. Upon arrival, visitors meet with certified personal trainers to develop a custom agenda that can include yoga, Pilates, hiking and biking, tennis, dance, and body sculpting. Two spa treatments are also included, as are healthy meals created by the resort’s executive chef, Beau MacMillan.
